Sandy Community Profile

Positioned between downtown Salt Lake City and Draper, Sandy City sits at the base of the Wasatch Mountains and is a picturesque place for lively community. With a population of more than 100,000, Sandy is the sixth-largest city in Utah. First established in the 1860s, Sandy City has had quite a few years to develop and become a major hub of Utah culture.

Today, Sandy is home to the impressive Mountain America Expo Center which hosts major events and gatherings year-round, the Jordan Commons entertainment and dining complex and the Shops at South Town shopping mall. In 2008, Sandy became home to Rio Tinto Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility where Utah’s MLS team plays during their March-November season.

Real Salt Lake has seen relative success since its 2005 founding; they won the MLS cup in 2009 and have a big following in the area. People from all over the state regularly travel to watch games at beautiful Rio Tinto, which in only a few years has become a Sandy City icon.

Sandy School District

For parents of school-aged children residing in Sandy, there are plenty of options for schooling. With so many choices varying between private, charter and public schools, it’s not hard to find the right fit for your child.

Sandy City is part of the Canyons School District, which was created in 2009. The district serves approximately 34,000 students and includes thirty-two elementary schools, ten middle schools, ten high schools and four special programs.

History

Located just thirteen miles south of Salt Lake City, Sandy was a predictable and likely place for settlement. First inhabited by nomadic Native American tribes like the Paiutes, Shoshones and Bannocks, the first permanent settlers began establishing homes in the area during the 1860s and 1870s. The city was first settled as a farming community, but when silver mining began in nearby Little Cottonwood Canyon Sandy quickly became a boom town and oft-frequented supply station.

The addition of a railroad in 1873 connected Sandy to Salt Lake City permanently, helping Sandy survive through years of persistent change and growth.
